We made it! We survived our first two months as a family of four. So much has changed for us over the last 60 days. From the everyday, mundane tasks (Where do we store all of these diapers?), to much deeper discussion (do I need life insurance?), everyday life just feels different. Before I sound like I’m opening a formal complaint, life has never been sweeter. We truly have been cherishing every single second of it. Even though we felt like we addressed all the essentials in preparing for baby’s arrival, there are a couple of things that I wish we had planned ahead of time. So, if you’re an expecting parent or you’re planning to start a family soon, here are a few additional things to think about.
3 Things to Consider When You Have a Baby
- Life Insurance Policy. This is something that has always been on the back-burner, but only because I never fully understood who needs it and who doesn’t. Now that we are responsible for our precious little baby, though, it’s a no-brainer. I’ve discovered the option for a no medical exam life insurance policy, which sounds absolutely wonderful and hassel-free. If you are unfamiliar with how that works, you can learn more information about it here. Now that our family is growing, having a life insurance policy is one of those things that has me sleeping better at night (between feedings).
- College Savings. The day we brought our baby girl home, we set her up with a savings account. Whether it’s savings for her first car or her first year in college, starting NOW is what matters. I hadn’t given it much thought until she arrived (probably because I had gestational diabetes, always felt like passing out, had thumping headaches, and swollen feet) but before baby arrives, decide on what savings plans you want to start for your little one. High-yield online savings or a 529a plan are places you can start!
- Choose a Pediatrician. You can’t set up your baby’s first pediatrician appointment until he or she arrives, but it’s a good idea to do your research as soon as you can. Deciding on a pediatrician for your baby should be a decision that isn’t made on the fly. It’s important to find a doctor that you trust, even if you only spend a few minutes researching local practices in your area. Trust me, it will make all the difference!
