Today’s blog post is one of my all-time favorites. It’s time to reveal a project that we have been chipping away at for the last month, our DIY at home coffee bar. Many (and hopefully most) of you who follow along over on Instagram have probably caught a sneak peek. With a project as cute as this, it’s hard not to leak a few progress pics! I’m happy to introduce our DIY Coffee Bar, with the ever-so-satisfying Before and After photos!
If you recall, we bought this house after only seeing it through photos on Zillow. During our first official walk-through, the first thing we envisioned was a coffee bar in the kitchen. FYI, my husband and I are both coffee-obsessed (I assume you are too) and have always visualized an adorable, Java-Themed corner of the kitchen. I mean, who hasn’t?! We knew where we were going to build our coffee bar but finding the perfect hutch proved much trickier than we thought. Furniture-supply stores proved to be an expensive option (i.e. nearly a thousand dollars), so we opted to utilize a familiar friend, Facebook Marketplace. A lot of the furniture in our house was purchased and repurposed through Marketplace and we have had some really fun and memorable projects. I can’t recommend it enough.

Before
The “must-have” features that we demanded from our perfect hutch were that it needed to be slim, and customizable. We wanted something that wasn’t too bulky and didn’t stick too far out from the wall. Through trial and error, we discovered that petite furniture complements our home. Finding that style of furniture in itself is difficult as that style is in high-demand. After 2-3 weeks of browsing, this came up on our search. We knew it was the one! It was only listed for 16 minutes and the seller told us he already had 3 inquires. Like I mentioned before, this was listed for only $50 and it was in great condition. We definitely saw potential in it and it was the perfect size. Fortunately, Eddie had mutual friends with the seller and the gentleman was eager to have our business.
After a 1 hour drive (each way!) we had our piece! The only part of the hutch that seemed physically outdated to us, was the funky trim. Eddie cut those curvy parts off using a Jigsaw and it really modernized this piece. The other structural change we made involved removing the lower shelf. If we left it as-is, we weren’t able to fit coffee pot under the shelf. We wanted the pot to fit flush against the back of the piece, so we removed the shelf to allot some more space.
AFTER PAINTING
Here is a picture of what it looked like after we painted it, removed the lower shelf and gave the curved section a straight edge across the top:
This made it look much more modern and clean. Eventually, we cut off the curves on the bottom sections as well and added doors (easier said than done).
Adding these hooks underneath the shelf allowed us to hang mugs across the entire shelf, while still allowing enough room to open the lid on top of the coffee pot.
Adding a plant and some cute accessories made it start to feel like a coffee bar. I love these coffee and sugar canisters from Target. This faux string of pearls plant is the perfect size for a narrow shelf.
In addition to coffee, we also enjoy brewing hot tea in the evenings. I knew I wanted to create a tea drawer and have seen them on Pinterest. When I saw that this hutch had drawers, I knew it would be a perfect fit. I ordered these tea organizers from Amazon and added in some of our favorite teas. I can’t wait to add to it.
We added doors to the bottom with a chicken wire front so that it still has an open concept but compartmentalizes the lower portion. We spray painted it black to mute it from the silver.

I’m looking for the perfect paint color for my own diy hutch transformation, what color did you paint this?

Ah, I am so sorry but I forgot to keep track of that and no longer have the paint. We definitely went more with a true white than an off white and the brand we used was Behr.

How did you get the shelf off?? I have one similar to this one and i cannot get the shelf loose! I can’t pull the little nails out of the bottom of it!
