One of the most frequently asked questions I get is “what do you use in your hair?” If you know me, you know my hair – it’s huge. I have always had long, thick, wavy hair and I have gone through many phases with it. It’s a love-hate relationship. As I’ve gotten older, I have definitely learned to appreciate it more but back in my middle school days I used to straighten it every single day. I have finally developed a haircare routine that works for me and all of the products mentioned in this post are ones that I believe in truly and wholeheartedly.
Let’s be friends on Instagram!
Through trial and error, I have learned a lot about hair care over the years and have found products that work for me and hopefully might work for you too. I have products I have recently found and love and some I have been using for years that I refuse to ever switch up. In today’s post, I am sharing it all.
A Little About My Hair
As I mentioned before, I have always had long, thick hair. I do color it (highlights, balayage, etc.), but not very frequently. I probably get my hair done one to two times a year. It’s naturally thick and I have never used a thickening or thinning product. It tends to be dry more than greasy. I actually feel like I could go two weeks without washing it and it still wouldn’t get greasy (don’t worry – I don’t ever go that long). It holds a curl so well. I can curl it and it will last a few days without any touch ups.
It is naturally dark brown and I used to always get highlights. Now, I get balayage, which is more of a natural look. I go back and forth between wanting to be more brown and more blonde. My advice if you are considering adding color to your hair is do your research. I have had one really bad experience and it happened because I didn’t do enough research and I went to someone I knew nothing about. Stick to who you know and get a referral.
My Favorite Hair Care Products
For years and years I was using any shampoo/conditioner that I could find in my house. Some of my favorites were Dove and Tresemme, simply because I liked the way they smell. Once I discovered what parabens and sulfates do to your hair, I switched to brands without those things, like Olaplex and Pureology and developed a haircare routine.
Olaplex
Using Olaplex has changed my life. Not only are the products paraben, sulfate and silicone free, but they have given my hair life again. I have been using all of these products consistently and have seen huge improvements in my hair.
Haircare Routine
Here are the products that I use on a regular basis. I wash my hair once a week and use the Olaplex shampooo or Purology Hydrate shampoo and Olaplex conditioner or the Purology Hydrate conditioner. I use the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Mask every time I wash my hair. After getting out of the shower I use the Olaplex No. 6 Styling Creme and the Pureology leave in conditioner. I like to switch back and forth between Olaplex and Purology, depending on what I feel like my hair needs.
Other Products I Love
I swear by my wet brush. If you have long, thick hair – invest in a wet brush. It makes brushing through your hair so much easier. I also love my curling iron, the T3 Micro Interchangeable Curling Wand. I use the largest wand the most of the three. My hairspray has been my go-to for the last 7 years. I will not use any other hairspray. This one is the best.
The IGK texture spray has made a huge difference in the volume I get in my hair. Since I have so much it can sometimes feel heavy and not very voluminous. I love it! Another step I never miss is the Living Proof Heat Styling Spray. It’s so important to protect your hair when you are using hot tools.

Love this blog post!! I used to straighten my hair everyday in middle school also, ugh. I’ve recently been looking into products to start the curly girl method because my hair has lost some of its natural curl as I’ve gotten older. I feel like we have the same curl pattern of our natural hair/thickness so I’m loving this blog post to see how you manage your mane! Thanks for the post!! Xx
