After an amazing, once in a lifetime vacation in Italy it is so hard to sit down and try to put it all into words. First of all, Italy is an absolute dream and insanely beautiful in its own unique way. The people are so kind and welcoming, the food is out of this world and the landscape is unreal. We spent a week traveling around the southern part of Italy and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. If you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw most of our experience through my stories. The entire trip felt like a fairy tale and I hope this Italy travel guide helps anyone who is planning a trip to Italy in the future.
What I can say is that reading blogs and watching vlogs is really helpful before going on any trip. To hear about the experience first hand will give you a better chance at receiving an honest and raw review. Another tip that helps me is going to the discover page and looking up the location to see any photos people have posted there. This is really helpful especially when planning out outfits. We went on a hike and I was unsure of the footing so I searched it on Instagram and it was great to see what other people had worn and see the footing in the photos.

Italy Travel Guide
Where We Stayed
We flew into Rome on an Alitalia flight and if you are looking into it, I do recommend the airline. The plane was really clean and cozy, however we did lose two bags and the customer service was not very good. Aside from that, the flight was nice. We drove three hours from Rome to Sorrento, where we stayed for the week in a villa. If you don’t want to drive, you can also take the train from Rome to Sorrento and it only takes an hour. The trains are really nice, clean, comfortable, affordable and fast. I recommend the train if you are considering.
We stayed in a villa that slept 12+ people. We booked our villa through Rent Villas and if you are interested in learning more about our villa, I can give you all of the details through a message. It was really nice to have a home base and the villa came with options for a chef, which we utilized a few nights. Sorrento is close to the surrounding coastal towns, making it very easy to travel by boat to Amalfi, Capri and Positano.

What We Did
Walk of the Gods
One of our favorite parts of the trip was the hike at The Walk of the Gods. It was absolutely unreal and was definitely a highlight of the trip. There are many ways to go about the hike and there are lots of different trails but I will share with you what we did. We drove to a small town on the top of the mountain called Agerola. From there, we met our guide. You do not have to have a tour guide but I highly recommend it because it is a tough hike and we ran into many lost tourists. Here is where you can find a tour guide. We had Enzo, and we absolutely loved him. This hike is do-able for people of all ages and you can go at your own pace.
The beauty of this hike is that you get the most outstanding views from above and you are able to hike down to the coast of either Praiano or Positano. When we went the trail down to Positano was closed due to a landslide so make sure you do your research before you go.

Amalfi Kayak
Another one of our big activities was the Amalfi Kayak tour. It is really awesome to see the coast from the water. It gives you a whole new perspective and you can see a lot more than you can from the road since a lot of places were built into the side of the cliff. The tour was four hours and that included many sights, kayaking into a sea cave and a stop on a beach for swimming and snacks.

Positano
We actually did not spend much time in Positano just due to timing and scheduling but I would love to go back and visit. Positano is great because it is packed with hotels and restaurants and you won’t need any form of transportation if you stay there. The other towns are all accessible from there by boat. Positano was absolutely beautiful.

Day in Capri
Capri was my favorite day. I had no idea Capri held so much beauty. If you aren’t familiar, Capri is an island and is only accessible by boat so if you do go, I highly recommend a boat tour. The island is beautiful but it’s really great to see it by boat. The water is beautiful to swim in and there are plenty of places to drive the boat to. Message me for more info on the boat we booked.
When you are on the island there is the lower part and the higher part, Anacapri. On the upper part you can ride the chair lift and if you are okay with heights, this is a must-do. The views are out of this world. If you are looking to do shopping, do it on the upper level. The lower part can get pricey.

Where We Ate
One of our favorite restaurants was found when a random man on a moped saw us in a parking lot and told us to follow him. We followed him about a mile up a mountain and he led us to one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. The restaurant was located right above Sorrento and it was called Il Borgo.

Another one of our favorite restaurants in Sorrento was called La Pergola. It was attached to a beautiful hotel and it was on the side of the cliff. We stopped there for lunch one day and it felt like a dream.

The Chef
One of the benefits of staying in a villa is having access to a chef that will come to your home and cook right in your kitchen. This was one of my favorite parts of the trip too!

Tips and Lessons Learned
- Always pack clothes and important items in your carry on
- The driving in Sorrento is wild; no street signs, no traffic lights and wild, very narrow streets
- Research before going somewhere
- Do your best to get to know the locals
- Carry cash with you in case you need to use the restroom
- Bring your own water bottle and carry it with you, the Italians give you very little cups of water at every meal
- Italy in the summer is really hot

I just finished a similar trip for my birthday and your photos are bringing back so many memories! A bit of FOMO though because we didn’t get to Capri. I’ll have to go back! Thanks for the tip about Anacapri!
Makes me wanna go to Italy ASAP.
You have gotta go!
totally stunning pics.. and Sorrento looks like a place I will fall in love (as will I with the others…) great tips
Thank you. It is a very beautiful country.
What a fantastic post, Sophia! I once travelled through Italy for 5 weeks, and have often regretted having not ventured south of Rome. That’s why, as a cruisetour planner, I find your post most illuminating!
Naples is a major cruise departure port where you can begin and end your cruisetour vacation. MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises are major mass market luxury Mediterranean-style cruise lines based in Italy. They both offer weekly 7 night cruises out of Naples to Mediterranean ports of call including Barcelona (Spain), Marseille (France), Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Messina and Palermo (Sicily), La Valletta (Malta), and Cagliari (Sardinia), to name a few. Marella Cruises (formerly Thomson Cruises) is a British cruise line that offers 7 night cruises around the Adriatic Sea to ports including Messina, Venice, and Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia, to name a few.
I always recommend that my clients extend their cruise vacations with a pre- and/or post-cruise stay in or near their port of departure. After reading your post, I can confidently and enthusiastically recommend Sorrento to my clients seeking a more authentic, off-the-beaten track, immersive experience and an opportunity to live like the locals. The trip from Naples to Sorrento isn’t long, as the two cities are only about 31 miles (50 km) apart.
However, unlike your experience with the train from Rome, public transportation is often crowded, chaotic, and delayed. The best option for a simple and easy arrival by far is to book a private transfer. Private transfers include pick up at the Naples airport or cruise port and car or minivan with a driver and luggage transport to your hotel or villa. Estimated cost: EUR 100 for the one-hour trip that includes the option to stop for photos of the beautiful views of the Sorrentine peninsula along the way.
I completely agree that reading blogs and watching vlogs is really helpful before going on any trip, which is why I’ve already pinned your blog post to share with my clients. I’ll also share your post with my Facebook travel group. Thanks for making my job easier! Best wishes and happy travels.
This looks so amazing!!!We are planning a trip for 2020 to Italy, and I am now ever more excited! Thanks for all of the info, especially the info on the Villa Rental.
Firstly, your photos are absolutely gorgeous. Whatever preset you’re using really fits the way that you take your photos and brings out the old gorgeousness of Italy. Secondly, Italy is one of those places that has slowly made its way onto my list of places to visit– it looks stunning!
Glad you had a lovely time! x
