How to Stay Motivated to Workout

This is probably one of the most blogged topics but it’s something that is so extremely important. As I have gotten older and taken responsibility for my own health and well-being, I have learned so much about the value of good health and how crucial it is to workout. In the big picture, good health is everything. We only have one body to take us through this life so it’s our job to keep it alive and well.

A healthy lifestyle is very different for everyone. Some people tend to do well with heavy cardio/weight training and some people tend to do better with taking long walks and eating well. Some of us have thicker body type and some of us are actually trying to put on more weight to achieve a ‘healthier’ body. I am definitely no fitness or nutrition expert, but I have tried a lot of things and have a genuine interest in leading a healthy life. I am currently working on my Integrative Nutrition Health Coach Certification and I have been learning so many tools and theories about a healthy body.

After pushing yourself to get started, the hardest part is staying motivated. This is something even the best of us struggle with. Excuses creep into our head and tell us that we don’t need to get to the gym or that it’s just a little extra ice cream. I am definitely an advocate for “you only live once” but I am also a firm believer that if we are going to live one life, we need to live a long and healthy one.

If you are starting or re-starting a journey to a healthier life, here are some tips on how I personally stay motivated.

1. Invest in your fitness apparel. This might sound funny but if you aren’t confident in your clothes, you probably aren’t going to be comfortable in your exercises. When you look in the mirror, you want to feel confident, you want to be able to envision a healthier and happier you and you want to be physically comfortable as well. Get clothes that fit, even if it’s a bit of an investment.

I have been loving these Revie Poppy Leggings and they are under $30. The Revie activewear line is very affordable, very comfortable and absolutely adorable. Check them out here.

2. Set goals and write them down. A goal in your head is one thing, but if it’s written down you are more likely to do it. A few years ago I kept telling myself I was going to run a half marathon. Not until I impulsively registered myself did I hold myself accountable for the training that came along with it.

3. Track your progress. Get a planner! My planner is my life. I write everything and everything down in it. It will help you stay on track, log results and keep inspiring you to move forward.

4. Do it with a friend. Accountability is probably the most useful tool to keep you motivated. If you have somebody on the other end who is expecting something from you, you are more likely to show up. Having a friend with you will also give you someone to ask questions to, vent to, relate to and support you.

5. Routine, routine, routine! I can’t stress this one enough. Pick a time that works for you and stick to it. Whether it be 5-6 pm everyday or waking up an hour earlier, stick to it! For awhile, I used to workout during my lunch break at my corporate job because that was the best time to make sure I always fit it into my routine.

Staying motivated is different for everyone and it changes over time. I used to be motivated to look good and now I am more motivated so that I maintain good health. What works for you may not work for someone else so I encourage you to find what works best for you and stick to it!

Agree! Should always find time for regular exercise. I also used to exercise during my lunch break since that worked best for my sched. Finding the right time and sticking to it is super important!

Routine, absolutely!! I kept working out in bursts of 2-3 weeks and then forgetting about it again. Only when I incorporated working out into my daily morning routine did I manage to actually do it consistently. And wow, what a difference it makes in mood and energy levels!

I was just sitting here procrastinating on my workout but I’m ready now! Routine is definitely key, after awhile, I actually feel off if I don’t follow it. Thanks for the reminder!

Love these tips! My best friend and I made a spreadsheet and tracked our workout times and progress and held each other accountable and that was the most motivating thing for me!

I definitely agree that routine is a HUGE part of working out. It can be so hard for me to get back into it if I take too much time off.

I always find I stick to an exercise program better if I write down my plan and stick to a routine. I love the idea of getting a friend on board.
