5 Characteristics of a Great Friend

This post is in partnership with Mantra Band.

In my opinion, everyday should be national friendship day. Can you even imagine your life without your friends? Friends come in all shapes and sizes. For me, my very best friends include my family, my boyfriend, my dogs and even my horses. Any relationship – romantic, professional and friendly relationships are two-way streets. We are all guilty of times when maybe we have been a bad friend – I know I am.

Friendship is a very powerful thing. One bible verse comes to mind to remind me of this.

Do not be misled: “Bad company disrupts good character.”

1 Corinthians 15:33

5 Characteristics of a Great Friend

  1. Available
    • A great friend is available when you need them. A great friend will not only make time for the relationship but also put time into the relationship. In any relationship it is really important to set time aside for the other person.
  2. Honest
    • A great friend will tell you the truth, even when it hurts. The best part about honest friends is that they will help you grow more than anyone else, whether you like it or not.
  3. Listens with open ears
    • This is so important! A lot of times people go to friends before going to family in fear of acceptance or judgement. A friend is someone who should listen intently and offer full attention when the other person is talking. I have a few friends in mind that are so great at this.
  4. Loyal
    • A great friend is loyal and shows constant support. A loyal friend is faithful and devoted to the friendship. Loyalty shows that this person is not only a great friend, but a great person.
  5. Forgives
    • Humans are not perfect and we are going to make mistakes so forgiveness is an extremely important factor in a healthy friendship.

I’ve learned as you get older, friendships change. At one time, friendship meant going and doing fun things and spending time on the phone and being there for each other at a moments notice. Now that I’ve been married for several years and have three kids, friendship looks different. It’s text messages and Facebook chat. It’s having to reschedule because of one thing or another with the promise that you’ll get together soon. They are someone you can call when life gets tough, even if it’s been a few weeks since you’ve been able to hang out.

I love this about great friends – it can be so hard to know who are going to be the friends that are by your side and there for you, especially as you go through life and things change. The best friends are there through it all!
