How to Run a Half Marathon When You Hate Running

Okay, I don’t hate running or I wouldn’t be doing this but it is pretty low on the list of my favorite things. During my senior year of college, my room mate and I were up late one night talking and we got on the topic of goals. We were going through the motions and wanted something bigger, something to work towards and achieve. She decided she wanted to write a children’s book and the word half marathon just sort of slipped out of my mouth and five minutes later I received a confirmation email that I had just registered for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. Six months later I successfully finished and it truly was an awesome experience.

“It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.”

We have all heard that once or twice and quite honestly the journey to the race is difficult, especially if you are not a runner but one thing is for certain, you can do it. Yes, you should probably train but if it’s something you have ever thought about doing or if you just want a goal for yourself this is the perfect opportunity. Here are my three tips for you:

  1. Get the right running shoesI am not lying when I tell you I was the only person in Nike’s at the race. I did not see one other person in them and I felt a bit like I didn’t belong but hey, I made it. If you like running in Nike’s then go for it but in preparation for my upcoming race I took a shoe test on the Brooks Running website and the difference is real. I strongly recommend getting prepared in advance and train in your new running shoes. Shop shoes here. Do you really wanna lose your toenails?
  2. Follow a plan. The internet is full of a wide range of running plans from people who are not active at all to people who are already pretty active. The plan I have been following can be found here. It helps to have something to guide you.
  3. Remember that you can do it. Just because it is a race does not mean that you have to finish first. Finishing a race of that caliber is quite the accomplishment in itself. Thirteen miles sounds overwhelming but if you can accomplish that, you will establish a mind that is ready to take on more challenges and conquer them all.

One last little thing – the adrenaline you get and the thousands of people cheering you on while you cross that finish line and get your medal will make it all worth it. If you want to sign up – do it! If you are hesitant and you need a push, contact me! I will go through your training with you or be your own personal cheerleader. To all my fellow runners out there – you got this!

Great Job! I keep starting to train and then become derailed. Not enough hours in my day! Have you purchased some Brooks yet? I run in Vibram Five fingers which are awesome on trails and tracks but not so much on concrete. Was thinking of buying a pair myself.

Yes – the shoes I am wearing in the pictures are Brooks and they honestly make such a difference. My Nike’s killed my knees and these feel like they lift me off the ground. I linked them above 🙂

I love the last point on not having to feel like you must finish first. My first full marathon is this saturday and i really do not like running but have always had it as a goal. I have had to tell myself so many times that the time does not matter as long as i finish and accomplish my goal.
